9 Untold Secrets of Getting More Twitter Followers

1. More people than you think use twitter software already

If you imagine only a few lone software-users automating their twitter accounts then you are underestimating the situation thousands and thousands.

Twitter has over 10,000,000 users. TEN MILLION. Thousands of those are people who don’t have the time or inclination to sit at their computer all day adding new people and unfollowing people who don#t follow them back.

Really, who has time for all that?

For anyone with even a small amount of decent life to lead, anything above 10 minutes a day just gets dull.

Twitter software is needed if you have any hope of getting more Twitter followers.

2. 95% of people are using Twitter to promote a website or blog

That number is a guess of my own. I haven’t seen any official stats anywhere, but I think it’s probably pretty accurate. Pick any 100 accounts at random. Look in every Bio space, top of the sidebar. Do they have a link? I would bet 95 out of any 100 would.

So don’t feel bad about plugging your own site. Everyone is aware of what you want, and you are aware of what everyone else wants. You’re not stupid. These followers of yours are bloggers, and website owners, and writers, and product owners.

You want them to click on your links, they want you to click on theirs.

So join in and be both interesting and interested.

3. Lots of people will only follow you so you follow them back

This is a commonly known twitter strategy. Follow people, they will likely follow you back. Then occassionally go in and unfollow those who haven’t followed you back.

So get to it.

And don’t feel bad if you DON’T follow someone back. If they don’t interest you, don’t feel pressure. Just like in real life you are not expected to be interested in everyone.

4. It is completely ethical to outsource boring tasks to a twitter friend adder

Twitter Friend Adder ManIf you were to sit at your computer all day endlessly following interesting people on twitter, click click click with your mouse, that would be just fine. You are perfectly allowed to do that. Nothing unethical about that.

If you were to outsource the task to someone in a poorer country, paying them a couple of bucks per hour to do it for you, that would be perfectly fine too.

But to save both time and money, you are perfectly allowed to get some software to do the clicking for you. It can run day and night, doesn’t ask for breaks, doesn’t need to be paid an hourly wage, and will never complain.

Ahhh… what a dream.

To get more twitter followers you need to stop feeling bad about utilizing every option at your disposal!

5. A custom background helps more than you think

When potential followers look at your profile for the first time, and say to themselves “should I follow this person or not?” one of the things that can have the biggest impact is a custom background.

There are plenty of websites that will help you build a custom twitter background, and it will only take you a few minutes.

You must know from looking at other people’s profiles how much better a customised profile looks than a defauly blue one looks.

It just makes sense.

6. Some people buy twitter accounts with lots of followers

This could mean any of 2 things to you.

It could mean “Wow! Twitter followers are more valuable than I thought!”

Or could mean “Wow! I can do that!”

You can build up a twitter account with a few thousand followers, and go to some auction site and list the account for sale. Myspace accounts with lots of friends sell every day, although for less now than ever before because myspace is dying a very quiet death.

Twitter however is all the rage right now. Why not experiment with selling a few twitter accounts?

You can build up the follower numbers using a Twitter Friend Adder.

7. There is a limit to the number of people you can follow!

Yep. It’s true. You can’t just go out tomorrow and follow a full 3 million people just so they will all follow you back.

It works like this:

At first you are limited to following 2000 people
Until at least that many have followed you back
When they have, your limit is raised
And raised
And raised
Basically, they are just watching your ratio.

You don’t want to go out and follow thousands of people with none of them following you back. That’s ridiculous and not very smart.

The way to get around this is by following people, waiting for them to follow you, then unfollowing those who haven’t followed you. Software can handle this whole task for you, so you don’t really need to worry about the twitter limit much. Just be aware of it so you don’t go overboard.

8. People LOVE inspirational quotes

Tick ImageIf you want someone to ReTweet you try posting some inspirational quotes. Would you believe that’s one of the most popular RT subjects? [observed from my own research]

How about: “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality” – Warren Bennis

Who doesn’t like reading that?!

9. Everybody hates Direct Messages

I haven’t done any surveys about this, but I believe it’s true. A Direct Message on Twitter is a painful thing indeed. Too easy to spam people, to many to read, less efficient than email or @replies, and you can’t reply from your email inbox.

So automate your welcome message if you feel the need, but don’t get carried away with Direct Messages because they are hated.

Hated!

So there you have it. 9 unwritten rules and useful thoughts.

Use them wisely!
